What is the purpose of obtaining uninsured or underinsured motorist coverage?

Return to FAQ Videos

Transcript:

The purpose of ensuring that you have uninsured or underinsured motorist coverage in Florida is to make sure that under certain circumstances you can still make a personal injury recovery. For example, if you are hit by a hit and run driver and that person is never located, that qualifies as what’s called an uninsured motorist claim. Your insurance company would now be required to pay for the damages of a personal injury claim, your unpaid medical bills, your lost wages, and your pain and suffering.

Also, and very importantly, uninsured motorist coverage in Florida also means underinsured motorist coverage. What that means is that the person that causes the accident that their company, the at fault insurance company, does not have enough insurance under their policy to properly compensate your loss.`You can also make an underinsured motorist claim against your own company. This type of insurance is probably the most important type of insurance that you can buy in the state of Florida, because it always protects you regardless if the other person has insurance, or not, or not enough insurance.
